I recently received some good questions about jReviews and earning money from web advertising. I have posted the reply so that others could learn.
What is jReviews?
jReviews is an extenstion for the Joomla! Content Management System. jReviews allows you to create a review website complete with editor and user reviews, custom fields, themes to style the layout, and the administrative tools needed to manage it.

So you have installed Joomla 1.5, now what? Here are 5 extenstions that I always add to improve the core functionality of Joomla 1.5.
- JCE (Joomla Content Editor) -- a better WYSIWYG editor
- Mass Content -- Add new Sections / Categories / Articles quickly and easily
- sh404SEF -- Search Engine Friendly URLS and other SEO enhancements
- xMap -- a full featured site map
- Joomlapack -- Backup and Restore your site

A customer of Intown Web Design developed an offline postcard campaign. The postcard campaign centered around their revolutionary new product. The postcard instructed them to visit a website about the new product. However, this website was not complete. To provide the best customer experience we created a 301 redirect to the existing product page on the company's main website.
The challenge that we faced was how do we track the number of people who received the postcard and followed the instructions.
The problem was solved using link tagging with Google Analytics UTM values.

It is my opinion that jReviews is the best review extension and sh404SEF is the best SEF component. However they do not always work the best together. This article describes how I make the best of both worlds.

There are many template clubs availble for joomla and other popular CMS. So the big question is: How do you select the best template for your site? There are many excellent templates available and you will need to have a system that eliminates inappropriate templates.
Before we start on the template and area of web design that is often over looked is web site usability. If you are not familiar with web usability a great book to start with is Don't Make me Think by Steve Krug. This book has really helped me understand how people browse the web and how to design sites that are the easy to navigate and make the information easily accessible. This book was a big infuuence when creating Joomla Hosting Reviews

When is enough enough with your web hosting provider? One of our websites is being hosted with dreamhost. Their
uptime has not been the best but it has never been down long enough for the need to take action and change hosting providers. The site was down about once or twice a month and for never more than an hour or two at a time. Over the past two weeks it has been getting worse down almost every other day. Each time the site goes down it is for 5 minutes to a couple hours.
Well today was the final straw.

Fireboard is a great forum component for Joomla and their developers have made it very easy to incorportate adsense into your forums.
There are two main steps to add the Adsense Code to your Joomla / Fireboard web site.
1. Add the needed module positions to your joomla installation
2. Install an adsense module and publish your adsense code to module position you just created.
There are a few more steps but that is the high level overview. Pretty Easy. Read on for step by step instructions.

After reading through a 15 page optimization post and the rest of the Chitika posts, I decided to summarize what I have learned about Chitika ad placement.
The thread at Chitika was website owners requesting optimization tips from the moderators for the placement of Chitika ads on their site. After seeing much of the advice repeat I thought I would create a top ten list of Chitika placement advice.

I have recently signed up to be a Chitika publisher . This company is a great fit for product review websites and has been getting good reviews. I have deloped a way to add the code to a single place in a jReviews template and use Joomla variables to determine the appropriate product for display.

I recently had a question from a cliet about using flash in emails. I do not see it done that often and I have never had the need to embed flash in emails. So we did a little research to find what others thought about the use of Shockwave Flash in email.

There are two main ways to add social bookmark submit buttons to jReviews templates and both are fairly straight forward:
- Use Joomla Social Bookmarking Plugins
- Add the code to your jReviews template
1. Joomla Social Bookmarking Plugins
I have personally installed and configured two of the popular social bookmarking plugins Social Bookmarking Buttons Plugin and SocioTag . Both are good and had their pros and cons. Personally I did not want the extra code and links on my page. I am not exactly sure of all of the code the plugins add. My pages are already complex and I try to keep them as simple as possible. Finally I could not get the button placement exactly where I wanted it.
2. Add the Social Bookmark code to the jReviews template
Each social bookmarking system has its own special code to submit the link and information in the correct way. The easier it is for a visitor to add you page the more likely they are to add it. I decided to figure out the code for the most popular social bookmark system. Then I could add this to the jReviews template system. It was a little extra work but now I can add just the links I want, have complete control over the look and placement, and not worry about any unneeded code or links.
